Every time we went for a walk when we first moved to Texas I was reminded of California. I think there is one tree that is grown in our neighborhood that also grows in California. The smell of the blossoms immediately brought me back to California. I associate the smell of campfire smoke with running, for some reason. I have a candle that reminds me of Papua New Guinea. I love musty smells…but I haven’t quite figured that one out yet.
There are also certain tastes that remind me of my past. For example, avocados remind me of Papua New Guinea. Pistachios remind me of my mom. Spaghetti brings me back to the time my dad put “special ingredients” in our spaghetti (one of the special ingredients was chocolate).
Songs also remind me of different people, events, and feelings. “Have I Told you Lately that I Love You” brings me back to the time Wendy and I were singing it together and our RA walked in in her pajamas because she thought we were yelling at each other. “When the Cold Wind Blows” brings me back to Cella Bosma’s beautiful memorial service. “Fall for You” was a song that Chris played on one of our first walks. I thought it was cheesy, but it makes me smile. “Don’t go Changing” makes me picture my mom and dad dancing in the kitchen. “Itsy Bitsy Tweenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” reminds me of work because they always played that.
What sorts of things instantly bring back memories for you?
