Without Easter, Good Friday would not be good. Our Savior would have died…powerless, unloving, inconstant, weak, deserting, gone, dead.
Our Savior did die.
Why did He die? Because of us. What did we ever do? I don’t know about you, but I wasn’t even born yet when he died, so that doesn’t make sense. But it’s true. It was our sins that held Him on the cross! He died for all past, present and future sins.
Why did He die? Because of His great love for us. He did not die to leave us or because he was weak or powerless. He died so that He could be a ransom for you and me, worthless sinners. Because of Good Friday and Easter, all of our sins are forgiven if we are repentant.
On this day between Good Friday and Easter, reflect on the lyrics of this song:
How great the father’s love for us! How vast beyond all measure, that He should give his only son, and make a wretch his treasure. How great the pain of searing loss! The father turns His face away, as wounds which mar the chosen one bring many sons to glory.
Behold the man upon the cross, my sin upon his shoulders. Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held him there, until it was accomplished. His dying breath has brought me life. I know that it is finished.
I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no power, no wisdom. But I will boast in Jesus Christ, his death and resurrection. Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart: his wounds have pain my ransom.
